Thomas F. Talbot PhD earned a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University in 1952, an M.S. from the California Institute of Technology in 1953, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1964. Since 1967 Dr. Talbot has been on the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1983 through 1989 and was also Professor of Materials Engineering. Currently he is Professor Emeritus. Dr. Talbot formerly taught at Vanderbilt University (1965-76) and at the Georgia Institute of Technology (1958-65). He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Wales in 1973.
Dr. Talbot has served as a consultant to numerous corporations as a design engineer and to numerous attorneys concerning product liability. He spent 33 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General in 1985.
Dr. Talbot is a member and Chairman of the State of Alabama Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. He is a member of the National Council of Examiners of Engineering and Surveying, serving on its Examination for Professional Engineers. Previously he served on its Uniform Exam Qualifications Committee, Finance Committee, Examination Audit Committee, Foreign Engineering Education Evaluation Committee and Law Enforcement Committee.
Dr. Talbot is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was selected by the Alabama Society of Professional Engineers as the state’s Engineering Educator of the Year for 1988. He has over 50 publications and has given presentations at numerous technical meetings.
